What's New

Every QuickSnip release, newest first.

v2.5.3

More reliable uploads

Sharing holds up on a slow connection

  • Sharing a recording no longer fails just because your connection is slow. Uploads used to give up after 40 seconds per part, so anything under about 2 Mbps could never finish. They now track real progress and keep going instead of hitting a fixed deadline.
  • If an upload does fail, you now get a plain message telling you what happened, not a raw error code.
  • Quitting QuickSnip while a recording was still uploading used to leave it stuck for good. It's now cleaned up properly on your next launch, so you can try sharing it again.
v2.5.2

Files, longer free recordings, and a steadier desktop app

Upload any file

  • The Upload button in your dashboard now takes any file, not just images and videos. PDFs, zip archives, text files, markdown, and docs all get a home.
  • Text and markdown files render right on the share page. Everything else shows a download card instead.
  • Every upload gets a share link of its own, the same as a recording, and counts against your plan's storage the same way.
  • Uploading files needs a Pro or Team plan for now. Free accounts see an upgrade prompt when they try.

No more five-minute limit on the free plan

  • Free recordings can now run up to two hours instead of five minutes, and storage is the only other limit.

A steadier desktop app

  • If the microphone you picked is unplugged or missing, recording now falls back to your default mic and tells you, instead of failing outright.
  • The microphone and camera picker no longer saves an empty device, one less way a recording could start with no mic at all.
  • Settings are written more safely now. A stale read or a failed load can no longer overwrite the settings file you already have.

Command line

  • quicksnip upload takes any file too, and lands it in the space or folder you name. Update with npx quicksnip@latest (0.4.0).
v2.5.1

Pause now really pauses, and straighter answers when an upload won't go

Pause actually stops the recording

  • Pausing used to stop your microphone but leave the screen and computer audio recording. The paused time stayed in the video while it was cut from the audio, so anything you paused came out longer than expected with the sound drifting out of step. Pause now stops all of it, and nothing is written while you are paused.
  • Both the widget's pause button and the keyboard shortcut go through the same check, and the widget will not show "paused" until the recording has genuinely stopped.
  • Recordings you already made with pause cannot be repaired, but new ones are correct on both Mac and Windows.
  • A recording's saved length no longer includes the time spent finalising it after you hit stop.

Straighter answers when an upload won't go

  • A blocked upload used to blame the five-minute free limit whatever the real reason was. It now tells you the actual one: sign in, out of storage, or genuinely over the recording limit.
  • Uploads that were rejected for your plan, or for needing sign-in, used to fail with no notification at all. Every rejection now tells you.
  • A recording too big to upload says so plainly, naming its own size against the 2 GB limit. Fixing pause also makes recordings much smaller, so far fewer reach that limit.
  • If a recording would put you over your storage limit, you are told before the upload starts instead of after it finishes.

Dark mode that stays dark

  • Choosing Dark now keeps the app dark even when your computer is set to light. It used to snap back.
  • Text and illustrations across the marketing site are readable in dark mode and meet contrast standards.

Getting snips into the right folder

  • Move a snip into a folder from its menu, not only by dragging it.
  • Dragging a snip into a folder inside a space now files it in that space rather than your main library.
  • Uploads made with an API key can pick their space and folder.

Command line

  • quicksnip upload takes --space and --folder, with quicksnip spaces and quicksnip folders to look up the ids. Update with npx quicksnip@latest (0.2.8).
  • quicksnip agents install works out which editor you are using instead of demanding --target, and asks when it cannot tell.
  • --dry-run now says what it would do, rather than reading identically to a real run.
  • A mistyped --org is caught up front, and --wait names the specific reason a recording is not ready yet.

More improvements

  • Recordings imported from the older version show their real length instead of a blank.
  • Uploads no longer load an entire recording into memory before sending it.
  • The pricing comparison no longer clips on phones.
v2.5.0

Drag files straight in, and uploads that survive a bad connection

Drop files onto the window

  • Drag an image or a video anywhere onto the QuickSnip window to import it. Dropping onto the tray icon has worked for a while; now the window itself takes them too.
  • If you drop something mid-recording it tells you why it can't take it, instead of appearing to do nothing.

Uploads that survive a bad connection

  • A single dropped connection used to end an entire upload. Parts now retry with a backoff of roughly one second, then three, then seven.
  • If your laptop slept past the upload link's expiry, QuickSnip signs a fresh one and carries on rather than failing the whole recording.

Transcripts that recover on their own

  • Transcription now runs through a callback with a watchdog behind it, so a transcript that stalls gets picked up and retried instead of never arriving.

More improvements

  • New cookbook recipe for recording your screen with the computer's audio, plus one on getting a recording into a form an AI agent can read.
  • quicksnip agents install now rejects an unknown --target instead of quietly setting up the wrong editor. Update with npx quicksnip@latest.
v2.4.0

Your snips can now be read by AI agents — plus a command-line client

Hand any snip to an AI agent

  • Add .json to any share link and you get a machine-readable version of that recording — transcript, chapters, and whether it's finished processing. No login needed for a public link, so you can paste it straight into Claude, Cursor, or your own script.
  • Use "Copy agent link" on any share page to grab it in one click — screenshots included.

A QuickSnip command line

  • Upload a recording or screenshot from a script, a CI job, or an AI agent: npx quicksnip login, then npx quicksnip upload ./bug-repro.mp4 --json.
  • Add --wait and the upload blocks until the recording is actually ready to read, so an agent gets a usable result in one step instead of polling.
  • quicksnip agents install sets up Claude, Cursor, or Codex to use QuickSnip for you.

A share-link shortcut worth knowing

  • Append + to any screenshot's share link to jump straight to the raw image — handy for pasting into a chat, an issue, or a pull request. This one has been there a while and we never showed it off.

A calmer screenshot editor

  • The editor remembers your last tool, so you stop re-picking the arrow on every screenshot.
  • One drag draws exactly one arrow — no more surprise duplicates stacked on top of each other.
  • Your tool stays selected after you draw, instead of quietly switching back.
  • Type a hex colour directly — the colour field now looks and behaves like the input it always was.
  • The Capture button stays on screen for tall and full-screen selections, so it can never end up out of reach.

More improvements

  • New cookbook with step-by-step recipes for common QuickSnip workflows.
  • New docs section covering the CLI and the agent-readable format.
v2.3.0

System audio, a cleaner mic, and faster screenshots

Record your computer's audio

  • Capture your computer's own sound in a recording — perfect for demos with audio, not just your microphone.

A cleaner-sounding microphone

  • New "Reduce background noise" toggle applies voice isolation to your mic, cutting room hum and keyboard clatter so your narration comes through clearly.

More improvements

  • Switch your microphone, camera, or audio source mid-setup — inputs update instantly, no restart.
  • Optionally skip the confirmation step on area screenshots — QuickSnip captures the moment you release.
v2.2.0

Copy to clipboard, smarter capture, and a more reliable recorder

Copy straight to your clipboard

  • Screenshots copy to your clipboard the instant you capture — paste them anywhere, no extra step.
  • Turn auto-copy on or off in Settings.

A smarter screenshot editor

  • Annotations remember your last-used style per tool — set your arrow color or highlighter once and it carries over.
  • Your edits copy to the clipboard automatically when you leave the editor.

Sharper window & screen capture

  • Click a window in the picker to lock onto it, and stay locked until you move away — no more grabbing the wrong one.
  • Optionally include QuickSnip's own windows in a screenshot when you need them.

Recording you can rely on

  • QuickSnip checks you have enough free disk space before a recording starts, with quick access to auto-delete old recordings.
  • More reliable capture across multiple displays — no blank frames, and the right screen every time.
  • Microphone and camera lists refresh the moment you plug or unplug a device.
  • Clearer messages when a capture or upload can't complete.

More improvements

  • Edit or clear a keyboard shortcut right from its row.
  • Scroll the Studio timeline with your mouse wheel.
v2.1.0

Big improvements to screenshots, recording, and sharing

A reworked screenshot editor

  • Annotation tools are always within reach, with a unified Background & Frame panel — padding, rounding, shadow, and border in one place.
  • Retake a shot without starting over.
  • Screenshots now export at full resolution.

Sharper, more reliable Mac recording

  • Recordings capture at full physical (Retina) resolution with a proper quality bitrate.
  • Fixed recording durations and playback on static screens.
  • Exports keep your recording's true aspect ratio — no forced black bars.

One-click sharing & image links

  • Share screenshots as direct image links or Markdown.
  • Copy a share link straight from your library, with a cleaner, more consistent share menu across the app.

Import more, faster

  • Drop a file straight onto the tray icon to import it.
  • Bring in HEIC, WebP, and AVIF images alongside the formats you already use.

More improvements

  • Check for updates any time from the tray menu.
  • Theater mode on the web share page for distraction-free viewing.
  • Fixed a first-run issue where a fresh install wouldn't show up under Screen Recording in System Settings.
v2.0.0

  • Instant share links — every recording and screenshot gets a link the moment it's ready.
